Why are Location Services Necessary?

Level 11’s orchestr8 platform provides location services features for both mobile devices and kiosks. Unlike Google Maps and Apple Maps, orchestr8 services work both outdoors and indoors. Traditional mapping products have minimal support for indoor positioning.

To support indoor positioning, orchestr8 incorporates information from multiple data sources including beacons, wearables, sensors, cameras, and more. Combining the data streams from each of these sources, orchestr8 provides the most accurate positioning information possible.

orchestr8 location services are contextually aware. If your friends or family members are running applications built with the orchestr8 SDK, location services will be able to show you where they are and guide you to them. If you are maintaining your schedule with orchestr8, location services will “know” where you are supposed to be going and will default to provide the necessary directions.

Finally, orchestr8 is an enterprise-class solution. It has been used to provide positioning information for very large structures with thousands of sensors and thousands of customers present at the same time. Its tools support the rapid construction of floor maps and the specification of sensing hardware. Workflows are designed to facilitate the batch import of large amounts of data. Integration with legacy systems is provided to facilitate use of existing sources for place-of-interest and other data. Dashboards are provided to monitor and track the performance of its services.

What are the features?

Guest-Facing

The orchestr8 platform provides native mobile libraries for both iOS and Android. These libraries facilitate the incorporation of location services and wayfinding features into branded mobile applications. The library implements a “view” with various features:

  • Mapping – shows you where you are and lets you explore a “structure” (consisting of multiple levels and logical places)

  • Tracking of friends/family members

  • Identifies and lets you search for places-of-interest (POIs) – POIs are described using information in a content management system (CMS) that allows you to update this information easily.

  • Route/wayfinding – Routes may navigate through multiple levels of a structure, as well as support certain considerations such as ADA requirements and other factors that can affect travel time.

  • Travel time estimates – given a destination, the view can estimate how long it will take to travel there based on the route and factors that affect travel time.

Back-of-House

Implementing location services and wayfinding for a structure requires that information be entered to describe the structure. This information includes not only the floor plans for the various levels of the structure, but also the definition of “places” and the identification and description of POIs. If the positioning solution involves beacons or sensors, the position and description of these also need to be specified. To support wayfinding, routing possibilities must be identified by the specification of “waypoints” that define traversal route segments.

To support these requirements, Level 11 provides the orchestr8 Management Console (OMC). The OMC is a UI framework that supports a set of “plugins” to extend its functionality.  Plugins are provided to support the various configuration and monitoring features needed for location services. The console provides role-based access control features to assure that back—office personnel can only access the features that are relevant to them.

To support ongoing update of POIs, Level 11 provides a CMS that is used to store descriptions of POIs. Descriptions can include visual media (e.g. photographs) as well as textual information.

The OMC is used for monitoring and operations support in addition to system configuration. The orchestr8 platform requires hardware and services to regularly report status and performance information and this data can be viewed in the OMC.

Finally, the orchestr8 location services are implemented using REST APIs. This facilitates the use of these services by any other applications that want to incorporate mapping and wayfinding features.  Additionally, the location services can also publish information to messaging systems – for example, Kafka – and to other external applications.  Applications that want to support location awareness can receive information directly from location services or can subscribe to relevant topics in a messaging system.

How does it all work?

The orchestr8 platform enables simple and rapid deployment of indoor positioning and wayfinding applications, through its Location Services and Wayfinding modules.  These modules provide software services, administrative tools, and a client-side SDK that work together to:

  • Deploy software simply, on-premise or in the cloud

  • Easily ingest and maintain venue data -- maps, beacon & sensor locations, places of interest

  • Rapidly build web and mobile applications for wayfinding, location analytics, and more
